Abstract
Present excellent engineers are not enough to support the social and economic development, and engineering education face with many challenges. The scope of the engineering is expanding with the rapid development of economy and technology. Then the demand for engineers shows the complexity and diversity. In this paper we have proposed the engineer should be classifieds into research-oriented engineers, design-oriented engineers, field-oriented engineers, service-oriented engineers and management-oriented engineers. After that, different requirements about knowledge, capacity and characteristics are discussed. The cultivating objectives, pattern and process of different universities are proposed.
