Abstract
We drove the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2 /-/sup 2/D/sub 5/12/ transition of laser-cooled trapped Yb/sup +/ by frequency-doubled diode-laser radiation. The /sup 2/F/sub 7/2/ state, pumped by driving this transition, was deexcited by irradiation at 3.43 /spl mu/m, 638 nm, and 828 nm.
