Abstract :
Nonlinear distortions causing significant performance degradation in high-density magnetic recording channels are known as nonlinear bit shift and partial erasure. A new method for identifying the nonlinear distortion using an independent, identically distributed (i.i.d.) input is described. The proposed approach allows on-line estimation of Volterra kernels (or nonlinear distortion parameters) of a channel due to low computational complexity as well as estimation of Volterra kernels independently. The feasibility of applying the proposed approach to estimation of Volterra kernels (or nonlinear distortion parameters) for high-density magnetic recording channels suffering from nonlinear bit shift or a partial erasure effect is demonstrated by computer simulations
