Abstract
This paper concentrates on the new information technologies, called in Euro-speak telematics. The definition of telematics is telecommunications of information technology. Developments in autonomous navigation and traffic information services and how they are being integrated into vehicles are covered. The likelihood of the PC becoming part of the motor car and the consequences in terms of safety and the interface between the driver and the machine are considered. The paper then covers the developments in new information, warnings and control equipment, which are leading towards the concept of an automated highway
