Abstract :
A wrist-type satellite personal locator beacon uses a helical antenna in a shape of a conical spring. The antenna is stowed inside the device and operates while the cover is open and the spring is stretched. The locater transmits 3W to 7W (at 406 MHz) and the antenna gain should be -3 to 4 dBi at elevation sector of 10° to 50°, thus the EIRP should be 32 to 43 dBm. Our optimal design of the helix was tested in Europe and has been approved for use in the CosPas SarSat global Constellation.
