Abstract
A strategy for the cost optimized protection of electrical machines is developed based on the application of decision theory. A probabilistic approach has been used to evaluate system dependent failure probabilities considering different overvoltage phenomena. This approach enables utilities and system designers to improve their risk management by risk pooling over large populations of electrical machines. An expert tool is developed to apply the proposed approach to daily engineering.
