Abstract
Variability in power output is a characteristic of wind energy, resulting in an adverse impact over the power system. In order to reduce the wind power impact over the power quality, a SMES is applied to smooth short-term fluctuations in wind farms. An independent power control strategy is used for the SMES. An indirect wind power control strategy based on compensating the power fluctuations by SMES is investigated. The simulation results show that the short-term power fluctuations can be smoothed and the system voltage deviations can be properly damped, which verify the effectiveness of the control strategy of SMES.
