Abstract
The performance of phased arrays degrades as the beam is scanned off broadside due to the effects of mutual coupling. A classical technique known as wide-angle impedance matching alleviates this issue by introducing a dielectric sheet at some distance above the array. Replacing the dielectric sheet with a metasurface allows greater flexibility in achieving a match. Here, a zero-thickness sheet composed of split-ring resonators is shown to achieve a significant improvement in the H- and D-plane scan of a phased dipole array, while having minimal impact on the E-plane.
