Abstract
Historical and cultural blocks is the carrier of long historical and cultural passing and spreading, which is also an important factor to shape the characteristics of urban. In recent years, the protection of historical and cultural blocks was shocked by the modern urbanization construction in China, and a lot of architectural and cultural traditions were damaged. In this paper, four basic principles were proposed according to the protection and renewal of historical and cultural blocks, separately from the social structure, cultural connotations, economic vitality and ecological environment. Several envisage were proposed on how to combine protection with renewal in the urban construction. The suggestions included raising awareness of public participation, government policy support and system protection, scientific decision-making, etc.
