Abstract
This paper presents an on-line non-invasive fault diagnostic technique that can predict the condition of aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in the output filter of switch mode power supplies (SMPS). The aluminum electrolytic capacitors aging process manifest itself by the increase of their equivalent series resistance (ESS). The proposed method uses the input current, the output voltage ripple, the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and the least mean squares (LMS) algorithm to predict the ESR value.
