Abstract
The National Grid Company plc (NGC) owns and operates the high voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales. Controlling this system involves the gathering and analysis of large quantities of data, relating to both technical and economic operation of the system. This paper describes the development of an object-oriented database (graphical information display system (GRIDS)) for power system modelling, together with a data visualisation application (general-purpose on-line database (GOLD)) being developed in parallel. In addition, further applications are being developed which will assist the control engineers in the assimilation of data and provide suggested courses of action where required
