Abstract :
The design and experimental results of a novel 140 GHz quasioptical gyro-TWT are presented. The gyro-TWT is designed to operate in a TE03-like mode in a confocal waveguide to produce 100 kW at 140 GHz with a gain of 38 dB. Initial experiments have yielded 9 kW of power at a gain of 25 dB. The detuning characteristics also indicate a bandwidth of at least 1.4 GHz. The gyro-TWT interaction structure which is formed by a pair of confocal mirrors exhibits tremendous potential for high average power operation in the W-band and beyond.
