Abstract :
The decade before the January 1963 merger of the Institute of Radio Engineers, combining the Society of Wireless Telegraph Engineers and the Wireless Technical Institute in 1912, and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, founded in 1884, was a time of internationalization, computing applications, and journal start-ups. Organizational differentiation and integration related to technical societies in medical electronics including imaging, telecommunications, and industrial engineering relate to emerging applications in nuclear, space, automation, and genetics technologies. IRE and AIEE organizations in medical electronics evolved as linkages between private enterprise, government organizations, and universities changed in contexts of regional development and technological innovation.
