Abstract
The formation of S/sub 2/F/sub 10/ under high-power arc, spark or corona conditions in SF/sub 6/-insulated equipment is reviewed. It is shown that S/sub 2/F/sub 10/ is likely to be found in low-energy discharges such as spark or corona. Recent findings of trace amounts in high-power arcs raise concern for health and safety and call for further research. It is pointed out that future investigations must take into account factors such as gas impurities and moisture in the practical environment. Ultrasensitive techniques to detect the formation of S/sub 2/F/sub 10/ in gas-insulated equipment are required.<>
