Abstract :
Over 20 years of research and development effort on lithium metal polymer batteries has resulted in a revolutionary design for a stationary battery offering high energy density, reliability and long life, under the most extreme environmental conditions. In addition to the valuable benefits of the physical and performance attributes of the LMP battery, an energy network strategy can leverage the built-in intelligence of the battery and allow operators to rethink the provisioning, deployment and maintenance practices of backup power in the outside plant. This paper reviews how the features and characteristics of an energy network designed using the LMP battery as its key building block creates a new operating model for the power network, and identifies the benefits of this new paradigm.
