Abstract
Page decomposition is very important in order to achieve an efficient interface for electronic (re)usability of documents. This paper proposes an approach in which the page is first segmented and classified into background text and image areas. These areas are then manipulated separately with a dedicated compression method applied to each class and represented in a way which provides an easy and open interface; for example, to send, manage or archive selected or all parts of the document. We call this a document management interface (DMI)
