Abstract
A novel approach to beamforming is presented using an array composed of elements each supporting a unique radiating mode. The 1D beam synthesis properties of the novel ideal multiple mode dipole array is quantified using Fourier analysis and compared to a conventional linear dipole reference array. Finally, full-wave simulation of an 8 element multiple mode dipole array is shown to have nearly constant scanned realized gain which is 5.5 dB of higher than a 7 element conventional linear dipole array at maximum scan angle.
