Abstract
We present a simple model to estimate the dielectric strength of gases. This model is based on a classical mechanics approach for which both the electrons and the molecules in the gas have a finite size. Based on an avalanche mechanism and on an estimation of the molecular size, we report an expression of the dielectric strength which is proportional to the pressure, to the distance separating the electrodes and to the molecular radius which is a simplified description for the detachment cross section.
