Abstract
The development of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier has created new challenges in designing amplified WDM lightwave systems. Opportunities to accrue maximum benefit from the new technology are available only after thoughtful analysis of impediments in both the optical amplifier and the lightwave systems that use it. Here we will discuss these challenges and the innovative methods to alleviate the problems they create
