Abstract :
A review of the stated requirements of the Japanese program to generate power from combusted solid waste heat had previously indicated the suitability of thermoelectric power generation systems. This paper provides the results of an internal study designed to develop a low cost PbTe device which meets the requirements of this program. In particular, it is shown that existing devices incorporating current PbTe technology are estimated to have a conversion efficiency of 5.0-6.5% for this application and capable of 15 years operation under steady state conditions. Furthermore, a complementary materials development program is outlined which is projected to push the conversion efficiency to 10%. Additional efforts are required to develop a lower cost device suitable for automation and ensure long term cycling performance in order to meet the remaining requirements of the program
