Abstract :
We demonstrate that with weak optical confinement, laser cavities which manifest a particular modal profile can be used to control the threshold transverse mode - here we use a dumbbell cavity to promote a TEM01 mode. Manipulation of the transverse cavity geometry and waveguide depth may prove valuable to engineer the optical chacteristics of VCSEL diodes and arrays
