Abstract
Infrared pumped lasers that produce radiation at wavelengths shorter than the pump wavelength are called "upconversion lasers". They operate by combining, through the operation of at least three different mechanisms, the energy of two or more infrared pump photons to produce an excited state of an impurity ion in an appropriate host crystal that has an energy greater than the energy of a single pump photon alone
