Abstract :
We have developed the capability to phase lock the picosecond infrared optical pulses from the Mark III free-electron laser, and have implemented an apparatus to compress these pulses down to several hundred femtoseconds. Spectroscopy with sub-megahertz resolution is possible by filtering the individual longitudinal modes, and Doppler-free and coherent nonlinear spectroscopies can be performed using the unfiltered train of ultrashort pulses
