Abstract :
Summary form only given. Although we have been enjoying higher and higher mobility brought by automobiles since its invention, we are facing serious problems, such as increasing number of casualties by traffic accident and deteriorating natural environment worldwide. Concept of intelligent transport systems is to solve the problems of transportation with information and communication technologies. The concept was introduced when the first World Congress on ITS was held in Paris in 1994. Since then, we have been working hard to implement the concept into reality as collaboration among public authorities, academia, and industries. The speaker reviewed the plan, development, and deployment in the past 10 years. Primary focus of auto industry was development of intelligent and fuel-efficient vehicles. However, auto industry is getting more and more aware of the necessity of integrated systems with infrastructure and sustained effort made by the society as a whole. Now, policies on the grand design are drafted and public-private cooperation is being established in the most dynamic ways, which no one has ever imagined. The speaker elaborated on the new stage of ITS endeavor for the sustainable mobility
