Abstract :
Korea Telecom has been leading the development of SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy)-based synchronous multiplexing and optical transmission equipment, and the result has produced 155/622/2488 Mbps equipment, which are named SMOT-1/4/16 (synchronous multiplexing and optical transmission system level-1/4/16), and those SDH equipment have been widely deployed to carry a huge amount of calls between telephone offices in Korea. Transmission equipment, by nature, are very stable, and require very little O&M (operation and management). For this reason, the SDH equipment developed in Korea have the minimal O&M function, which is to process inquiry and control commands from the operator´s terminal serially connected to them. However, as the number of SDH equipment and their O&M terminals has been increasing every year, the need for centralized monitoring on SDH equipment has surfaced. By centralizing and replacing the existing O&M terminals by SMOT-IT, operators are able to access the rich statistical data that can not be provided by individual terminals. Also, it enables more efficient use of space in the transmission operator´s room that has been excessively occupied by multiple terminals. The SMOT-IT has provided the solutions to the problems of the existing terminals, and therefore established centralized monitoring and efficient management on SDH equipment within a telephone office
