Abstract :
The access and backbone networks of today´s public switched telephone network (PSTN) will face many changes in the next century as they are integrated with the emerging data networks. Before this can happen the data protocol used in the access networks will have to be resolved. The future backbones will continue to evolve from the multi-protocol ones of today to higher speed ones using an integrated protocol based on the ATM and IP protocols. This paper attempts to project the evolution of these protocols from those of today to the network protocols in the 21st century
