Network based video storage for retrieval over the ISDN

This paper describes the development of video information services which can be accessed by videophone terminals over the integrated services digital network (ISDN). These terminals can be either desktop videophones or personal computer (PC) based videophone cards. Such network based services require the storage of potentially large amounts of audio visual material. This material can then be retrieved on demand. The paper considers the various services which may be offered. A number of problems arise in the development of services of this nature, which are discussed, and solutions, where they have been found, are presented. A video database demonstrator which has been developed at BT Laboratories is described. Currently, this demonstrator can only be accessed via ISDN by one user at a time, and only stores audio visual material. The demonstrator can be enhanced, to allow storage of full multimedia material, and access by many users simultaneously
