Abstract :
The effect of anomalous absorption in thin wires consists in the fact that the absorption cross-section of a cylinder can exceed the geometric cross-section by 3-5 orders of magnitude. This effect is extremely wideband. In the paper it is demonstrated on example of copper wires of nanometer-micrometer scale. Drude model of dispersion for the copper was used in the calculation, the resulting absorption cross section dependence on wavelength and wire diameter is fitted with a simple closed-form formula. The effect is analyzed from the time domain point of view and its possible applications are discussed.
