Abstract :
Biofeedback systems can serve a beneficial purpose for postural balance disorders, in particular Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This disorder can affect anyone at any age, but it can be more problematic with the elderly and has its source in the vestibular organs of the inner ear. BPPV is dependent on the physical position of the patient, particularly the head, which can induce a bout of vertigo. This vertigo could be particularly dangerous while performing such tasks such as driving or operating machinery. In order to assist persons experiencing this disorder, a device which can be placed on the person´s head can provide supplemental feedback signals which compensate for missing links in a natural balance coordination mechanism. This device utilizes an off-the-shelf micro-controller and a MEMS based tri-axial accelerometer to monitor the patient´s movements in XY plane. Software algorithms incorporate fuzzy logic operation which provides a patient, with positional feedback. In particular, the device allows the patient to differentiate between balance mechanism disturbances and movements associated with regular mobility thus contributing to an enhanced quality of life and safety.
