  • Abstract
In this paper, we present a new handover scheme, which could improve the quality of service (QoS) in mobile cellular systems supporting multi-rate traffics. In this scheme, the released channels are reserved for the handover call with the highest priority, determined by its dwelling time in the handover area. The performance of a cellular system employing the proposed handover policy is evaluated and compared in terms of blocking and forced termination probabilities, average queuing time. The results show that from an overall performance point of view, the new scheme is a better choice in multi-rate traffics environment.
