Abstract :
This paper investigates the effect of generation technology on the participation of adjacent synchronous machines in electromechanical oscillations. It is shown that its possible to predict the generator with maximum participation in the inter-area mode as a result of incoming doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) technology. Due to the changes in generator participation, as a result of system changes such as variation of load, generation, incoming DFIG technology, the nature of an electromechanical mode may change from local to inter-area and vice-versa. An innovative index termed as `localness index´ is introduced, by which the nature of a mode - local or global is determined. The variation of localness index with respect to different system parameters is investigated in this paper.
