Abstract :
Plane electromagnetic wave scattering by an isotropic elliptical dielectric cylinder has been revisited. The analysis is carried out by applying the radiation-to-scattering transform and the dyadic Green´s functions for the structure expressed in terms of elliptical vector wave functions. The general equations coupled to each other and satisfied by the scattering and transmission coefficients are then derived from the boundary conditions, expressed in matrix form, and solved numerically. Both TE- and TM-polarizations of the plane electromagnetic waves are considered in the scattering by an infinitely long elliptical cylinder which is regarded as a special case of electromagnetic radiation. Two source distributions at infinity an obtained to represent the plane waves of perpendicular and parallel polarizations. It is realized that the scattering coefficients are, in general, coupled to the transmission coefficients in both cases. When the elliptical cylinder degenerates to a circular cylinder or when the material of the cylinder is isorefractive, the scattering coefficients have a one-to-one matching in the modes and can thus be derived analytically. The derived equations and computed numerical results are then compared with published results and a good agreement is found.
