Abstract
We have recognized in the early stage of standards development that the synchronous optical network (SONET) infrastructure would involve several complementary types of transport equipment introduced in an integrated but phased manner., and that a ubiquitous SONET deployment would lead to a restructured transport network, providing many innovative features, but would require substantial new operations support. Several years have passed since the first set of SONET standards was approved. In this paper we examine the status of SONET development and deployment to see whether they meet the original expectations, discuss issues arising from deployment, such as the introduction of new features and the necessary support from operations systems, and briefly discuss the future directions of SONET
