Abstract :
Much has changed in the recent years with DO-178B certification requirements for airborne software having had a profound effect on the way avionics software is designed and delivered. The industry is now bracing for more change as it is beginning to feel the effect of DO-254 certification requirements. DO-254 is akin to DO-178B, but for airborne hardware. This presentation briefly outlines what DO-254 means for the use of COTS devices in avionics products and explores some of the ways that COTS hardware suppliers may be able to minimize the impact of DO-254 on their customers´ products. It goes on to show, through a real example, that some COTS hardware providers do understand and embrace DO-254 and are already moving in the right direction.
