Abstract :
A novel design methodology is proposed for ultrafast time-division demultiplexers for TDM-based fibre-optic communication systems. The circuit does not have any feedback. Therefore, the maximum speed is not limited by the loopback delay caused by the feedback. The circuit consists of three stages-the retiming stage, the AND processing stage, and the reshaping stage. The stages respectively employ optically controlled phase shifters, a two-conductor coupled line and a traveling-wave FET. The characteristics of each circuitry are investigated by HSPICE or finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. We report the results of the experimental investigations on the AND stage through the ultrafast measurement using electro-optic sampling techniques with an optical pulse pattern generator. The results suggest the potential to yield AND processing of at least 80-Gbit/s
