Abstract
Trends towards open systems, enterprise-wide business and plant automation, and field bus technology are transforming industrial automation, presenting major technical challenges to satisfy customer needs for increased productivity, reliability, and safety. Principal emphasis is placed on management of technological change and the explosion in information and complexity enabled by the new technology. ABB is addressing these needs in a broad range of applications, including process and automotive industries, power generation and transmission, building systems and transportation, built on a foundation of automation research as a core competence
