Abstract
A model was developed that estimates the performance of front-gridded concentrator solar cells exposed to the expected illumination conditions of point focus Fresnel concentrator module optics. The model uses standard test data of a reference cell to estimate the performance of similar cells exposed to the nonuniform illumination conditions of a PV concentrator module. It also is capable of analyzing the impact of a prismatic cover on cell performance. The model is applied to the module characteristics of the Sandia PV module studies. As a result of this analysis, estimates of the impact of nonuniform illumination on module performance are made. The analysis provides a design insight into the selection of a 15% metallized, prismatically covered cell.
