Abstract :
The design approach, system configuration, experience gained during system installation, initial trials, and actual field performance of a solar photovoltaic power system (SPV) is presented. A remote Indian village, Salojipally, isolated from the electrical grid, was selected for this project based on various logistic and technical considerations. A 7 kWp PV array was installed to operate water pumps for irrigation, fluorescent lamps for street and indoor lighting, table fans, a TV set, and a transistorized radio receiver set. These PV systems were installed in a phased manner during the period 1982 to 1984. The author concludes that the performance of the SPV system is, in general, very satisfactory.
