Abstract :
A set of three first-order differential equations makes up a three-compartment model enabling the control of high-efficiency short lasting hemodialysis. The speed of solute removal is a control function which fulfils inequality constraints. Parameters of mathematical model are online identified. The aim of inequality constraints for the state variables is to prevent the central nervous system compartment from the rapid intercompartmental shift of the solutes that causes the disequilibrium syndrome in dialysed patients. The time optimal control makes one of the two inequality constraints always active
