Abstract :
Modern computed tomography (CT) scanners use helical cone-beam configurations for increasing volume coverage and yielding isotropic spatial resolution. Recently, the backprojection filtration (BPF) algorithm has been proposed for image reconstruction in helical cone-beam scans, which is able to obtain the exact reconstruction of images within a region of interest (ROI) from truncated projection data. However, little effort has been devoted to studying the response of the algorithm implementations to physical factors such as data noise. In this work, we have performed an investigation on the noise properties of the reconstructed images by use of the BPF algorithm. A semi-analytical formula has been proposed for the estimation of the image variances.
