Abstract :
Sankosha Corporation has introduced Lightning Location System (LLS) that uses LS8000 to Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. for the first time in electric power companies in Japan, and constructed the system. It can detect cloud-to-ground (CG) discharges and cloud discharges. This system is composed of a central processor (CP8000) and lightning sensors (LS8000). The system detects cloud discharges using very high frequency (VHF) interferometry and also detects CG discharges by receiving low frequency (LF) signals and by using the techniques of magnetic direction finding (MDF) and time-of-arrival (TOA). Kansai Electric Power started observations using this system in 2008 and could observe CG discharges and cloud discharges. This report introduces the observation results.
