Abstract :
Summary form only given: Digital signal processing fundamentals for multidimensional systems (such as television) are reviewed. An appropriate signal decomposition for transmission and reconstruction for display is described employing both spatial and temporal signal processing. This leads to a choice of resolution and picture quality achievable at the expense of hardware complexity. The artifacts introduced by interlaced transmission to conserve transmission bandwidth can be substantially reduced by sequential scanning at both the source and display. Solutions for removing display artifacts are given. The requirements for artifact free motion portrayal are shown. Several adaptive processing algorithms are analyzed. The complexity required for various system implementations is examined. The practical realization of several key components impacting the receiver design is discussed. Conclusions and recommendations for future research are presented.<>
