Abstract :
The introduction of ATM technology in the customer premises is being propelled by the need for a seamless interconnection between the end subnetworks. We determine the end-to-end performance of internetworked asynchronous ATM LANs and internetworked integrated services ATM LANs by using a simulation based approach. The internetworked asynchronous ATM LANs are considered to be comprised of IEEE 802.3 LAN end subnetworks. A study to determine the performance sensitivity of the end subnetworks to internetworked LAN traffic is carried out. We further demonstrate the feasibility of providing interLAN telephony service integrated with asynchronous services in internetworked ATM LANs. This entails the implementation of a crucial technique, which we have developed in the interworking units so as to segregate the voice data from the asynchronous data. A great demand exists in enterprise networks for providing interLAN telephony integrated with asynchronous data service. The end subnetworks considered in the case of the integrated services homogenous ATM LANs are IEEE 802.5 LANs, whereas the end subnetworks considered in the case of heterogenous integrated services ATM LANs are IEEE 802.5 and the standardised 802.9a (isoEthernet) LANs. A significant issue addressed in this case is the internetworking of the packet based IEEE 802.5 LAN to the 802.9a LAN
