Abstract :
During a period of eight years over ten nickel-hydrogen batteries (NHB) modifications, which differ both in design parameters and intended application, have been manufactured and tested at UEIP. The batteries differ in design (diameter and thickness of the cell components), manufacturing process, ways of heat removal, operating temperatures, test conditions and other parameters. A special feature of the batteries under development is that their series connected cells are contained in a single pressure vessel and have a common gas manifold. Operating time prolongation is among of the most important problems being solved by the developers of NHB. In the course of investigation and the long life tests the principal causes of the batteries´ performance characteristics decrease were revealed and attempts were made to eliminate them in the NHB design
