Abstract
The structure, operation, and protocols of the MIL-STD-1553 avionics bus are examined. The 1553 bus is a very flexible standard that is well-suited for rugged environments requiring computer networking. The standard provides features to control and monitor data transfers to efficiently manage the bus network. Development of a 1553 system is cost-effective because of the abundance of commercial equipment, especially VLSI chips for interfacing the computer to the bus. Off-the-shelf test and simulation equipment greatly eases the development, integration, and troubleshooting of 1553 systems, but a total evaluation of system requirements should be made before any procurement decisions
