            Abstract :
Highway runoff is one of the important water resources in urban areas, though severe pollution has curbed its direct use. In this study, a soil infiltration system is proposed for treatment of highway runoff. Bench-scale experiments with different inflow concentrations and system operation modes (continuous/intermittent) have been designed to simulate the highly varied inflow rate and pollution load conditions of highway runoff. The experiment results indicate that the system has a high treatment efficiency of 84%-94% for SS, 50% for TOC, 40%-80% for TN and 75%-95% for TP. Based on the experiment results, a full-scale installation was designed and constructed. Nearly one year´s operation of the installation showed that the system performs well with high treatment efficiency and the effluent can be used for irrigation and road water spraying.
