  • Abstract
Poor Power Quality is increasingly becoming a cause of concern for both the users as well as the supplier of electrical power. Low power factor, unbalanced loading, high harmonics distortion created by modern loads imposes new challenges for the designers of power distribution system. Modern power quality improvement devices such as active harmonic filters, thyristor switched capacitors etc. are becoming more and more common both in industrial as well as commercial application. These devices however do not address the problems arising due to demand side variation. This paper presents a novel application of active harmonic filters used to mitigate the peak of load demand by using the energy stored in a battery system. The results show that an active filter can be used as an excellent tool for demand side management and enhance its utility for the end user.
