Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows. The grating light valve (GLV) is a surface micromachined device based on electrostatically controlling the position of thin ribbons which comprise an array of reflective diffraction gratings. The GLV is well suited for portable and projection display applications. The GLV is capable of color operation as well as high brightness operation. Pixels switch in as short as 20 nanoseconds, are bistable and have demonstrated a contrast ratio as high as 200:1.<>
