Abstract
A multiridge model that is based on the surface roughness measurements of machined electrodes is presented. Containing three independent parameters which specify the essential geometry of a ridged surface, the model can quantitatively predict the effect of surface roughness formed by machining on the discharge of SF6 gas by means of the charge simulation method and the streamer breakdown criterion. Two turned electrodes and one electrode with a fine copper wire wound on it to form multiple semicylinder ridges were tested, and the model predictions were calculated. The results indicate that within the engineering pressure range the validity of model predictions is well ensured provided that the streamer criterion is decisively effective in the actual breakdown process
