Abstract :
Optical character recognition for printed Indian text is a classical problem because of round nature of these characters and presence of ldquomaatrasrdquo. Recognition accuracy of optical character recognition engines depends heavily upon correct representation of characters obtained by feature extraction method. Thus feature extraction is heart of recognition engines. We propose a novel spline approximation based method for feature extraction in recognition engines. The spline approximation is implemented for Indian characters and the results obtained are very encouraging as compared to existing feature extraction methods.
